Person in hospital after fire in Leyland

A person has been taken to hospital after a fire broke out at a shop in Leyland in the early hours of this morning (20th May).

Eight engines were called to the commercial property on Towngate at 12.22am which was well alight by the time they arrived and starting to spread to neighbouring properties.

The emergency services say passers-by helped to rescue people in the flats above the property.

The cause of the fire will be investigated

In a statement, the first service said:

"At 12:22am on 20th May 2021, eight fire engines, a stinger and an aerial ladder platform attended an incident at a commercial property on Towngate, Leyland.

"The fire involved a shop front and was well alight on arrival. Firefighters are using two breathing apparatus, four hose reels and one main jet to extinguish the fire. Incident is still ongoing."

This was updated at 3.53am saying:

"The incident has now been reduced down to six fire engines.

"All casualties were assessed at the scene with one being conveyed to hospital. The road is still closed and will remain closed into the morning."
