Parents Of Jane Clough & Carly Fairhurst Speak On Domestic Abuse
The parents of a Wigan and a Blackpool nurse, who both died at the hands of violent partners, are urging people to spot the signs of domestic violence in the workplace.
It's been revealed that 30,000 incidents of domestic abuse were reported to Lancashire Police in the last year.
This includes 10,000 domestic abuse crimes committed in the county in the past 12 months.
The parents of Blackpool nurse Jane Clough, who was murdered in 2010 and Wigan teenager Carly Fairhurst, who died in 2006, have been speaking at a special conference in Leyland.
They're urging employers to spot the signs that their work colleagues are being abused at home.
Detective Superintendent of Lancashire Constabulary Sue Cawley said: “Over 30 million people work in this country. It is a sobering fact that there will be people in your workplace who are affected by domestic abuse. Many will have performance, absenteeism and stress related issues – none of which are their fault, but this has a real financial implication for businesses.
“As employers, we care for the wellbeing of our staff. This event will educate employers and give them information about where to signpost staff in order that they can access support. This scheme is seen as a way of protecting victims. Lancashire benefits from strong support from local domestic violence outreach services. It will also strengthen the partnership by informing employers of the location of these services and the pathways which will allow victims to access services.”
