North West reaches Covid vaccine milestone
Over 10 million doses have been given out across the region
Last updated 6th Oct 2021
The NHS in the North West has hit a huge milestone by delivering more than 10 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine in ten months, latest figures show.
The landmark number includes tens of thousands of top up doses already given to eligible people in the region since the booster programme launched just over two weeks ago. Booster vaccines
are currently offered to everyone aged 50 and over, frontline health and social care workers and those aged between 16 and 49 with an underlying health condition putting them at greater risk from the virus at least 26 weeks after their second dose.
They are being given at more than 200 vaccination services in the North West, including pharmacies, hospital hubs, GP practices and vaccination centres, with many more sites due to start offering it in the coming weeks.
The region reached the latest significant milestone mid-week, with the latest live tracking figures on Wednesday, 6 October showing just over ten million first, second and booster doses of the vaccine have been given since the NHS vaccination programme launched on 8 December 2020.
The number means that 84% of the eligible population of the North West have now had at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
Dr Linda Charles Ozuzu, Regional Director of Commissioning (North West), said: “The NHS in the North West has hit an astonishing milestone this week and it is all thanks to the incredibly hard work of NHS staff, our partners, volunteers and of course, the public for doing their bit in helping the NHS keep Covid-19 under control.
“While 10 million is a number each and every one of us should be proud of, we have got more to do and I’d encourage everyone who is yet to book their jab or who is yet to have their second dose to book online or to visit one of the many walk-in sites in order to protect themselves and their loved ones. It’s not too late to help protect yourself and everyone around you.”
Once invited, people can book their booster vaccine appointment online at www.nhs.uk/covid-vaccination. People that aren’t able to go online can book by phoning 119
