North West health experts warn big events with thousands of people next month would be 'reckless'
It's as the Indian variant continues to spread
Health experts in the North West are calling on the government to think twice about letting big events with thousands of people go ahead next month.
It's as cases of the Indian variant continue to rise across the region.
The government's hoping it can unlock the last stage of its roadmap and open nightclubs from June 21st.
But despite the success of recent pilot events in Liverpool, former health boss for the region John Ashton said we shouldn't get excited just yet: "Now that we've got the feedback from the test events we can that these went off very well. I think it's dangerous to extrapolate from what we've had in these pilots to these very big events that are being proposed. To go from that to tens of thousands, I think that would be reckless.
"I don't think people should be packed in anywhere and packed into homes either because the spread now is largely domestic spread in people's households and community spread and will be more so in indoor premises as things open in the restaurants and the clubs.
"We've really got to take this on board, this virus is spread by aerosol, it likes crowds, it likes indoors, it likes closed spaces. We've got to really follow our common sense here."
