NHS urges Lancashire families to plan ahead for bank holiday care
With services expected to be busy, people are advised to use NHS 111 online, local pharmacies, and take simple steps to keep children well over half term
Families across the North West are being urged to plan how they access NHS services over the Spring bank holiday and half term, as health leaders warn services are likely to be busy.
Dr Michael Gregory, Regional Medical Director for NHS England in the North West, said accident and emergency departments and the NHS 111 phone service are expected to be under pressure. He encouraged people to use NHS 111 online at 111.nhs.uk for non-emergency help and advice, particularly for those aged five and over.
“For children under five, please call 111,” he said. “NHS 111 online can book appointments, arrange call-backs from health professionals or give advice on the best next steps.”
Local community pharmacies also offer quick access to advice and treatment for minor illnesses. No appointment is needed, and some can now provide prescription medication for common conditions such as earache, sore throat, or infected insect bites without needing to see a GP.
Dr Gregory added: “In the holidays, children are more likely to have minor scrapes or become unwell. Community pharmacists can help parents get the right support without going to A&E.”
Paul Johnston, Service Delivery Manager for NHS 111, reminded people: “Bank Holidays are our busiest time. If possible, use 111 online, which covers over 100 common symptoms and gives advice based on your main issue.”
Tips to help children stay healthy over half term:
Encourage outdoor play and physical activity
Keep children hydrated and use sun cream when needed
Maintain a balanced diet, good sleep routine and stay up to date with vaccinations
Treat mild illnesses like coughs and sore throats at home with rest and fluids
Use paracetamol or ibuprofen for fevers
Seek medical advice if babies under 3 months have a temperature over 38°C, or over 39°C for older children
For minor injuries, clean wounds and cover them to avoid infection
