Police are questioning a man on suspicion of murder after a woman died in a house fire in Nelson. Emergency services were called to the incident on Wednesday 23 November on Cooper Street. They found a woman in her 40s unresponsive, and a man in his 50s with a leg injury. Both were taken to hospital, however the woman was pronounced dead a short time later.

Lancashire Police are working alongside Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service to determine the exact cause of the fire, but after a number of further enquiries a 57-year-old man was arrested on 29 November. He's currently in custody for questioning.

Detective Chief Inspector Allen Davies, of the Force Major Investigation Team, says, “My thoughts first and foremost are with the woman who has sadly died and her loved ones. Our investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death are ongoing and I would appeal to anyone who has seen any unusual activity at the address over the past few days or weeks, or anyone who has any concerns about anything they may have seen or heard at the address, to get in touch. I would also be keen to hear from anyone who may have any CCTV or other footage which might show the address and people entering and leaving."

Anyone who does have any information can contact Lancashire Police on 101.
