Two men are in hospital after they ended up neck deep in freezing cold water off the coast of Blackpool.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has issue a statement, saying:

"Blackpool’s RNLI volunteers were called out at 9.30pm on Thursday evening (25th February) when the Coastguard received a 999 call from a man in distress on the beach. The casualty was unable to provide an accurate description of his location but was clearly in very serious difficulty and in need of urgent assistance.

"The Coastguard quickly established that the casualty was somewhere between Central Pier and South Pier so Blackpool’s RNLI volunteers launched one of the station’s D class lifeboats and headed to South Pier to begin Homea search.

"As the volunteer lifeboat crew were making their way to South Pier, they heard shouting from the sea near Central Pier and found two men clinging to the pier in neck deep water. Both men were extremely distressed and due to the freezing temperatures, they were also suffering from the effects of the cold."

The casualties were taken to Blackpool RNLI lifeboat station where they were treated for hypothermia by paramedic and RNLI volunteer, Brent Kenny before being transferred to hospital.
