The mayor of Burnley has taken his seat in the House of Lords.

Wajid Khan, who served as an MEP for North West England between 2017 and 2019, will sit as a Labour peer.

A councillor on Burnley Borough Council since 2007 and current ceremonial mayor, the 41-year-old was previously a lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire.

Lord Khan of Burnley wore the traditional scarlet robes for the short introduction ceremony where he swore the oath of allegiance to the Queen.

He was flanked by supporters and fellow Labour peers Lord Harris of Haringey and Baroness Hayman of Ullock.
