Hundreds of cars have gone up in flames at the scrape yard on Moorfield Industrial Estate in Altham.

Crews from Hyndburn were initially called to a fire at 4.42am but the flames quickly spread and crews were joined by six fire engines from across the county.

There are now 16 engines at the scene with at least 70 firefighters who are currently tackling the fire which is involving at least 400 old vehicles. There are around 2000 cars on site and crews are working to try and prevent the fire spreading further.

Crews are being supported by a high volume pump which is bringing additional water to the site and a hazardous materials unit which is providing specialist support and advice on protecting the environment and public health.

There is a significant smoke plume and residents are asked to keep their doors and windows closed.

People are asked to avoid the area and to take care if travelling in the vicinity.
