Man guilty of violent attack in Blackburn sentenced to 23 years
David Cairney was found guilty after the incident in March 2024
A man will be starting a 23 year prison sentence today (21 January), after being found guilty of a violent assault in Blackburn.
Lancashire Constabulary says David Cairney was involved in a "sickening" hammer attack on a man inside a flat in Stonyhurst Road on 30th March 2024.
When a woman intervened to help, Cairney attacked her with the same hammer.
The force says the 36-year-old also stole the man's bank card and wallet.
Both of the victims suffered a number of serious injuries which required hospital treatment.
Following enquiries, 36-year-old Cairney was arrested the same day.
He was later charged with two counts of Section 18 Wounding and robbery.
Cairney, of no fixed address, was found guilty on all counts by a jury at Preston Crown Court.
Judge Richard Archer sentenced Cairney to 18 years immediate custody and also deemed to be a dangerous offender.
He gave him a further five-year period on extended licence.
