Man rushed to hospital after serious crash in Southport

Merseyside Police have confirmed they have arrested a 57-year-old man following a serious crash in Southport last night (Monday, 24 February).

Officers were called to the incident, which happened on Cumberland Road, at about 7.53pm.

The force says a white Ford transit van collided with a 36-year-old man.

The injured pedestrian was taken to hospital by ambulance and is being treated for serious injuries, his condition is described as serious but not life threatening.

The driver of the transit van, from Southport, did not stop at the scene and was arrested a short while later on suspicion of causing serious injury through careless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

Officers are continuing to carry out examinations at the scene and are appealing for witnesses.
