A 64-year-old man has died after a crash in St Helens.

A white Renault box van mounted the grass central reservation of St Helens Linkway just after 10am this morning (Wednesday 24 July).

Merseyside Police believe the driver suffered a medical episode at the wheel.

The force want to speak to any witnesses, and motorists that have dashcams fitted to their vehicles, in the area of St Helens Linkway or Scorecross roundabout just before 10am.

The van may have stood out because of the tail lift on the back and the orange livery to the front and sides.

Detective Sergeant Simon Duffy, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said:

"Our thoughts and condolences are with the family of a 64-year-old man who has sadly lost his life this morning.

"We have now launched an investigation into his death and his next of kin have been informed. They are being supported by our specially trained liaison officers.

"We are appealing to motorists who were driving along the Linkway at around that time who saw the vehicle shortly before the incident or witnessed the vehicle coming to a stop to please contact us.

"I would urge you to please check your dashcam footage to see if it may have captured the incident which will assist in the investigation.

"Every piece information is vitally important to our investigation to establish what happened."

Anyone who saw the crash or captured anything on CCTV or dashcam is asked to contact SCIU on (0151) 777 5747, email SCIU@merseyside.police.uk or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting reference 24000644155.
