One dead and four injured after major motorway crash

One person has died, after a major crash on the M65 in East Lancashire in the early hours of this morning (2nd October).

Emergency services were sent to junction 9 around 3.37am.

The road has been closed in both directions between junction 8 (Hapton) and junction 10 (Burnley).

Lancashire Police confirmed five people were taken to hospital with "serious injuries, " and one of those people has since died.

A statement added: "Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this incredibly distressing time, and they are being supported by officers."

The North West Ambulance Service told Greatest Hits Radio: "We responded to an RTC following a call a 03.29, attending were five ambulances, two response vehicles and an operational commander.

"5 patients were taken to hospital, some those required treatment for serious injuries."

There are long delays on approach to the closure area (9am)

Emergency services are at the scene, with diversions in place.
