One person has died, and a number of other people have suffered serious injuries following a crash on the M6 in Lancashire.

Police were called at about 11.20am today to reports of a serious collision on the motorway close to junction 33.

The collision involved an HGV travelling northbound which crossed onto the southbound carriageway and collided with a number of other vehicles.

Emergency services remain at the scene and the motorway remains closed in both directions between junctions 32 for Lancaster and 33 for Preston while we continue to deal with the incident.

The closure is likely to stay in place for some considerable time so please check before you travel as diversions are in place.

Preston North End are also playing Sunderland at Deepdale tonight, so fans need to leave plenty of travel time to get there for the 8 o clock kick off.
