Lancashire man charged with attempted murder

A man from Lancashire has been charged with two counts of attempted murder.

Counter-terrorism detectives have been investigating a stabbing at the Marks and Spencer on St James Street in Burnley which happened December 2nd.

Two women - a member of staff at the store in her 40s and a member of the public in her 60s - were stabbed and taken to hospital for treatment.

Munawar Hussain, 57, of Lancashire, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and was detained under the Mental Health Act.

He was charged on Tuesday (25th May) following a counter terrorism investigation and consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service.

He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on the 1st of June.

Lancashire police say: "Although not currently charged with a Terrorism offence, should Mr Hussain be convicted, the prosecution will make representations to the Court that it determines whether the offence has a terrorism connection in accordance with section 30 Counter Terrorism Act 2008."
