Murder investigation launched after man dies in fatal Heysham assault

Lancashire Police have launched a murder investigation following a fatal assault in Heysham.

Officers were first alerted to an incident taking place at 3:55am on Saturday morning (September 28th), following reports of an assault.

When responders arrived at the scene, they found a man who had suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

However, despite the best efforts of ambulance staff to keep him alive, the man was pronounced dead on his arrival to hospital.

Following his death, the victim has been named locally as 49-year-old Keith Thompson from Morecambe.

His next of kin has been informed, with his family being supported by specialist officers, with the force sending their condolences to his loved ones.

Investigations into his murder have already begun, with enquiries taking place across the area.

Following lines of enquiry, officers arrested a 39-year-old man on suspicion of murder and currently remains in police custody.

Keith's family have paid tribute to him, adding: "As a family, we are shocked and saddened by what has happened to Keith and we would appreciate privacy at this time."

Speaking following the arrest, Senior Investigating Officer DCI John McNamara from Lancashire Police said: "This is a devastating incident that has very sadly resulted in a man losing his life.

“We have launched a major investigation, and we have a team of both detectives and uniformed officers and staff working on this enquiry to try and establish exactly what has happened in this incident.

“If you were in the area in the early hours of Saturday morning and saw or heard anything suspicious either then, or in the days before the attack, please get in touch.

“Incidents like this are extremely rare in Lancashire but we have increased patrols in the area, and if you have any information or concerns, please don’t hesitate to approach an officer.”

Enquiries are continuing as officers continue to appeal for information and witnesses following Keith's death.

Those who may have been in the area at the time of the attack are being urged to come forward, as well as those who may have any relevant dashcam or doorbell footage.
