Fire crews tackle blaze at church in Padiham

People are being told to avoid the area

Firefighters have been tackling a blaze at a church in Padiham.

Emergency services were called to St John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church on St John's Road at just after 8am this morning, with crews from a number of fire stations attending.

The blaze resulted in the closure of St John's Road during the morning rush, with a nearby primary school also affected.

In an updated posted, Lancashire Fire & Rescue said: "At 08:06 on the 18th March 2024, six fire engines from Hyndburn, Burnley, Clitheroe and Nelson along with the aerial ladder platform from Preston attended a church fire on St John’s Road, Padiham. Firefighters are currently wearing breathing apparatus and are using three hose reels to extinguish the fire. Crews remain in attendance.

"Update at 10am: This incident is being reduced to two fire engines whilst firefighters monitor and extinguish hotspots at the incident."
