Detectives are hunting the driver of a car that was involved in a police pursuit on the M61 near Bolton last night.

A Lancashire police officer was trying to stop the silver Vauxhall Vectra near Rivington Services during the rush hour yesterday evening, when his patrol car smashed into the central reservation and flipped.

"As the officer tried to complete a manoeuvre to get the Vectra to stop, the X5 collided with the central reservation and overturned", the police have said.

Firefighters on the scene had to use special equipment to cut the officer out of the car. He is now out of hospital, having suffered only minor injuries.

The Vectra was discovered abandoned in Westhoughton overnight.

It's thought it had been involved in a crash on Alfred Street in Blackpool shortly before 5pm on Monday.

Part of the M61 had to be closed whilst an investigation was carried out. It was reopened at around 11.40pm last night (Monday).
