Thousands of cyclists have descended on Blackpool for a sneak preview of the lights, ahead of this Friday's switch on.

The Promenade was closed from 6.30pm, allowing cyclists to ride the length to have a first look at some of the new illuminations that will be lit up this year, including designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen’s new installation on the Tower Festival Headland.

Entitled Disco Donkey Cavalcade, it is a celebration of one of Blackpool’s iconic beach attractions, with 12 donkeys dressed in 70s-inspired swimwear, parading on a 16ft high platform, beneath a giant ice cream topped with a disco ball!

Cllr Lynn Williams, Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “Ride The Lights is a fabulous event that is unique to Blackpool. Where else can you ride a bike in a traffic-free environment under a million shimmering lights!

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for our own residents and for visitors to come on to Blackpool seafront with their families and enjoy a magical experience.”

On Friday Joel and Leanne from Hits Radio will host a star-studded show as the big switch is flicked by Spice Girls legend Mel B.

She will be making a return to the town, having first started as a 16-year-old dancer at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Ella Henderson and Kimberly Wyatt will also be performing.
