A number of people have been treated for breathing difficulties after a mystery substance was sprayed following a row inside a KFC restaurant in Burnley.

Police say a man pulled a canister from a bag and sprayed a man following the argument yesterday afternoon at the Colne Road branch.

Some bystanders were treated at the scene. It is understood that no one appears to have suffered any lasting effects.

A police investigation has been launched.

A police spokesperson said: "We were called at shortly before 4pm to the KFC restaurant on Colne Road after a man pulled a canister from a bag and sprayed another man who he had been arguing with.

"The offender and victim left the scene but a number of people in the area suffered symptoms including difficulty breathing and were either assessed at the scene by ambulance staff or were taken to hospital. Fortunately, no-one appears to have suffered any lasting effects.

"The exact nature of the substance is not known at this time,

"Part of Colne Road was closed for a time while emergency services dealt with the scene and we thank you for your co-operation and understanding.

"An investigation into the incident has been launched and enquiries are ongoing.

"Anyone with information should contact 101 quoting log 0903 of today (July 7)."
