The Golden Mile will be shining bright once again from this evening!

Blackpool's Illuminations are being switched on from the Tower Ballroom by Strictly's head judge Shirley Ballas tonight.

Because of covid, the event's not happening in its usual style with a huge crowd on the promenade and instead there'll be a smaller audience at the iconic venue.

Taking to the stage will be KSI, Ella Henderson, The Wombats and Wes Nelson.

The event starts at 7pm in the Ballroom.

The Switch-On moment will be the finale of a live concert and will trigger the start of four months of free-to-access illuminations, only the second time in history the famous lights have been extended through the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Lynn Williams, Leader of Blackpool Council, said: "It's great, it's proper Blackpool. This year to be in the beautiful Tower Ballroom with all of that history, there's no better place. If we can't be outdoors on the promenade, then to be at the Tower Ballroom...we're not going to get any better than that.

"It's a historic event for us, it's a really important part of our season. It's so beautiful and against the back drop of our promenade and we have some wonderful sunsets in Blackpool, it's going to be great!"

There'll be a couple of new additions to the Illuminations with two giant lit up beach balls popping up and a 25-metre LED tunnel next to the Comedy Carpet.

There'll also be an eight feet tall 'I Love BPL' installation. The projection trailer located on the Tower Festival Headland will also be transformed into an illuminated sandcastle and watch out for the giant deckchair too!

You can live stream the event from 8pm via the Visit Blackpool website.
