A man has been arrested following a fatal collision in Blackpool earlier this week, Lancashire Police have said.

Officers were called to the junction Mowbray Drive on Plymouth Road just before 8pm on Monday evening (February 10th).

When officers arrived, they found that a car had collided with a pedestrian at the crossing of the junction.

The pedestrian - a man in his 70s and from St Annes - suffered serious injuries in the crash, and was taken to hospital shortly afterwards.

However, despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the man would eventually succumb to his injuries and he was pronounced dead in hospital.

The man is yet to be formally identified by medical professionals, with Lancashire Police saying they are trying to find the man's next of kin.

A second man - also in his 70s - from Blackpool was arrested by Lancashire Police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop after an accident. Following their enquiries, the man has been released pending further enquiries by police.

Previously, a 43-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has since been fully released from the investigation.

Speaking on the case, Detective Sergeant Joseph Ghigi from Lancashire Police said described the collision as "a tragic case", and appealed to the public for more information.

"Sadly, the deceased has not been formally identified, and we are continuing to make enquiries to identify his family members. I would appeal to anyone who may be a relative or who has any information which could help us find his next of kin to come forward," he said.

"I would like to thank the people who have come forward with information so far and I would continue to appeal for anyone who may be able to help us piece together exactly what happened on Monday evening to contact us.

"If you witnessed the collision, or the man in the moments before or after the collision, or if you have dashcam or CCTV of the Mowbray Drive area of Plymouth Road specifically the pedestrian crossing between 7:45pm and 8:05pm on Monday 10th February. Please get in touch."

Those who may have any relevant information about the case can get in touch by calling 101 and quoting incident reference number 1141 from February 10th.
