Detectives have arrested a man in connection with a shooting in St Helens.

At around 10.30pm on Monday 22 July, it was reported that a man aged in his 40s had been shot in the leg on Boxwood Gardens.

Emergency services attended the scene and the victim was taken to hospital. His condition is described as 'stable'.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a man was arrested.

A 32-year-old man from St Helens is being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Detective Inspector John Mullen from Merseyside Police's Firearms Investigation Team (FIT) said: “A man is in custody in connection with this incident but I’d like to emphasise that our investigation is very much ongoing. We want to hear from anyone who has yet to come forward, whether you witnessed the incident or captured anything through CCTV, dashcam and doorbell devices.

“We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw two men on foot acting suspiciously in the area of Herbert Street and Cecil Street following the shooting, which would have been shortly after 10.30pm. If you live in these streets, please check any devices. Small details can make a big difference, so let us make the assessment as to whether what evidence you hold is significant.

“Extensive enquiries will continue and we are determined to find those responsible. Working together, we can and will dismantle organised criminals who bring fear to our communities.”
