Coronation Street viewers were left a little puzzled earlier this week, when they noticed something strange about some hot drinks the characters had.

Whilst characters normally drink out of plain cups, now, following a product placement agreement with Costa and Corrie, they will now use Costa cups.

Some eagle-eyed viewers have already spotted the Costa cups being used and took to Twitter to leave comments such as 'Why do they have Costa coffee in #Corrie aren’t the drinks from Roys Rolls good enough? 🤷🏼‍♀️'.

Others just commented saying they had noticed the product placement.

Someone even started a poll asking if fans to choose between the current shops and the new shops, Costa and Co-op.

The fictional town of Weatherfield already has Roy's Rolls cafe, The Kabin or Dev's shops, but don't worry if you are a fan of the existing shops, because an ITV spokeswoman has confirmed, "There's no change to the shops we've currently got."

Speaking about the new arrangement Mark Trinder sales director at ITV said, “The expansion of the Coronation Street set has given us a great opportunity to feature branded shop facades as more of Weatherfield is opened up to viewers.

“Incorporating product placement on this scale is something we have wanted to do for some time and we’re delighted with this exciting opportunity.

“We’ve worked really closely with the Coronation Street team to make sure we’ve got a great brand fit for Co-op and Costa Coffee with the nation’s favourite soap while still ensuring editorial integrity.”

If you're wondering, new additions will not be full shops, they will just be shop fronts, meaning that the characters can't meet inside the shops. However, some merchandise such as posters, bags and cups which will be integrated into Coronation Street.

The shops are expected to make an appearance on screen later on in the Spring, when the newly expanded set will be used. Product placement on shows was first introduced seven years ago, but this is the first time a shop has been introduced.

Coronation Street is now aired six times a week, and last year they announced they would be expanding the set to account for this extra episode.

Coronation Street continues on ITV.
