Sir David Attenborough has a special of snail named after him and cannot contain himself
He has been honoured with the Attenborougharion rubicundus snail.
Sir David Attenborough has been honoured with quite possibly the most prestigious species known to nature: the snail.
A rare green and red Australian snail has been named after the nation's most loved naturalist.
The Attenborougharion rubicundus, pictured below, was discovered in December 2016 in a small area in the south east of Tasmania, Australia.
The snail was granted the name of Attenborough at a ceremony in Sydney's Australian Museum last week, where Sir David was delighted to receive the honour.
"Attenborougharion rubicundus will be on my wall in pokerwork, and I hope a photograph, for a long time to come, and I accept it with the greatest of pleasure and utmost thanks to you all," he said.
Catherine Livingstone AO, the President of the Australian Museum Trust, said: "There is no one else – you have no peer."
"Australia and the international community have benefited from your curiosity, knowledge, and unending commitment to the natural world to bring us the stories, and make us aware of the challenges we face, in a way that no one else has been able to do."
