It's the end of an era as online giant Amazon has confirmed that LOVEFiLM By Post will be closing later this year.
The Blu-ray and DVD postal service, allowed subscribers to rent films and TV shows before returning them in prepaid envelopes, however in recent years they have seen a decline in members, with many moving to online streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Despite the move to online streaming many fans of the postal service have taken to Twitter, after hearing the news, such as Michael Ramalho who said, 'The trek to the post box was well worth it!' and Sophie Knight who said, 'Bad news. So many films available to rent that you can't get on streaming'.
Members of LOVEFiLM will have until the 31st October to rent titles as normal, however they will not be billed for the service after September. Amazon have also said, "We are committed to finding alternative roles for all LOVEFiLM employees within Amazon."
LOVEFiLM was founded in 2002, before being acquired by Amazon in 2011 who introduced a video games rental service in 2013. In 2014 the On Demand video service from LOVEFiLM was removed, becoming part of Amazon Prime Video, while the By Post service continued with the LOVEFiLM name.
Whilst subscribers to LOVEFiLM won't automatically be transferred to their Prime Video service, existing subscribers will be offered Amazon's Fire TV Stick with a £15 discount, bringing the price down to £24.99.
