A Kent MP is calling on local businesses in his constituency to become 'safe havens' for women and girls.

MP Mike Martin is launching a scheme that would allow those who feel unsafe during the day or night to take shelter in selected Tunbridge Wells businesses, that have a special sticker in their window.

He said: "We live in quite challenging times, your listeners will be aware of these weird things that happen on the internet such as Andrew Tate, who are advocating this very strong, disrespectful male role models that treat women poorly.

"And that all bleeds into the relationship between men and women so this is something we can do to reduce those feelings of anxiety and vulnerability that people feel when on a night out for example."

Businesses that show the Safe Haven sign in their window will signal to residents that they’re available to help them.

They will offer simple help, this could be arranging a taxi, letting someone charge their phone, or offering a space for someone to call their emergency contact.

#TogetherAsAllies will also offer specialist training to businesses, so staff know how to respond to a vulnerable resident seeking help, as well as a support pack that signposts to local support services.
