Woman charged after human remains found in Canterbury

Enquiries had been launched into the whereabouts of a missing person

A woman has been charged with murder after human remains were found at a house in Canterbury.

50 year old Maureen Rickards was arrested on Thursday following the discovery in St Martin's Road.

Police are yet to confirm the identity of the deceased but say enquiries had been launched into the whereabouts of 65 year old Jeremy Rickards.

He was reported missing on 5 July having not been seen since early June.

Mr Rickards' family have been informed.

Ms Rickards is due to appear at Margate Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Kent Police say:

"On Saturday 13 July, the Crown Prosecution Service authorised a charge of murder against Maureen Rickards, of St Martin's Road, Canterbury.

"The 50-year-old has been remanded in custody to appear before Margate Magistrates’ Court on Monday 15 July.

"The investigation is being carried out by detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate and residents of St Martin’s Road are advised to expect an ongoing police presence in the area.
