'We may have to sell our farm': Rochester farmer worries over Inheritance tax
Farmers will meet with MPs tomorrow to discuss the move
A Kent farmer has told us they may have to sell their farm to pay for the new inheritance tax.
From April 2026, farms worth more than one million pounds will now face a tax rate of twenty percent on their inheritance.
And tomorrow, Tom Gore will meet with mps, along with other farmers, to discuss the plans.
He said: "It's a huge worry. We have nearly been farming for one hundred years, I have just had a son and he will be the fifth generation and I'm not sure whether you would be able to carry on the farm or sell the farm to pay for the tax
"Or it may leave us with a huge financial strain with the amount of money we are borrowing to pay for the tax that we wouldn't be able to expand
"We have got a large amount of tenanted land on our farm and that will impact our landlords the same way it would impact us. They may have to sell parts of their land off and that will result in me farming less land."
