Warnings of bread shortages as farmers withhold wheat
Some farmers across the country are currently striking by not releasing their milling wheat
A farmer from Kent is warning that over the coming weeks bread could start to disappear from our shop shelves.
It comes as some farmers across the country strike, by not releasing their milling wheat.
Matthew Cullen is from Canterbury, he explains the impact it will have.
He said: "We are doing this to highlight to the government about how important farmers are to society.
"We wanted the inheritance tax removed or at least amended but just a few weeks ago they slammed the door in our face and wouldn't be open to consultation and weren't willing to budge.
"And in a fortnight's time, the millers will be running short because they won't have anything to mill which means there will be no flour being made for your cakes and your bread and that rolls on and leaves a shortage."
The spokesperson for the government said:
"The chancellor announced £5 billion to help farmers produce food over the next 2 years – this is the largest amount ever allocated for sustainable food production.
"This is alongside £60 million for the Farming Recovery Fund which will help farmers recover from the impact of flooding. We are also investing £208 million in protecting the nation from outbreaks of serious diseases that threaten our farming industry, food security and human health."
