One million violent crimes against women and girls last year finds report
It was commissioned by the National Police Chiefs' Council
Last year, there were more than one million violent crimes against women and girls, a report has revealed.
It was commissioned by the National Police Chiefs' Council who found there nearly were nearly 3,000 crimes recorded each day of this nature.
New Leaf Support are a domestic abuse charity in Swale. They offer support for those in Sittingbourne, Faversham and Sheppey.
Amanda Walker is the CEO, she says the number of people needing their help has doubled.
She said: People talk about domestic abuse more. For years it has been covered up.
It happened behind closed doors but it's more out there now, more things portrayed that they feel safer coming forward. There's more support out there for victims than there has ever been."
Between April 2022 and March 2023, national Policing Statement for Violence Against Women and Girls found that such crimes accounted for just under 20% of all police-recorded crime excluding fraud in England and Wales.
The report estimated that at least one in every 12 women will be a victim per year - equating to two million women - with the exact number expected to be much higher because of crimes that go unreported.
When asked about what more can be done, Amanda said: "Funding is one of our biggest struggles.
"There needs to be put more money into it, not just for the big charities but the small organisation, like us, as well.
That money needs to be handed down. We are all doing that amazing job, we have all done the training so we can get that support out to people.
"It's about understanding what domestic abuse is too. It's not just a physical side, it's the emotional side as well, the way a person can control you, that's what they want, power and control over another person."
