An opportunist burglar has been jailed after leaving his fingerprints at a Maidstone break-in.

On 4 September 2023, Sean McFetridge was in East Farleigh when he saw the front door of a house had been left open.

He quickly entered the premises and after a short while was disturbed by one of the occupants who had been upstairs.

Making an excuse about seeking a glass of water due to being thirsty, McFetridge departed after he was told to leave.

The victim soon realised a laptop computer had been stolen along with jewellery and some keys. The police were contacted and an investigation was started by the Kent Crime Squad.

Crime Scene Investigators attended and recovered McFetridge’s fingerprints from a socket the laptop had been plugged into whilst charging.

Detectives arrested the offender on 7 September and he was charged with burglary.

Sentenced

McFetridge, of Lasius Drive, Coxheath, pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court. On Thursday 16 May 2024, the 41-year-old was sentenced to three years' imprisonment. This included the activation of a suspended sentence.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Josh Littley, said: "Burglary is a despicable crime that leaves victims feeling violated and unsafe in their own home.

"This offender thought nothing of the impact of his crime and cared only about making a quick profit from stealing portable items.

"A prompt investigation and forensic examination ensured this man was arrested within a few days and is now starting a prison sentence."
