National Highways have confirmed a section of the M2 near Kent will be closed for a full weekend.

The government-owned company says it needs to continue essential repair work to the Merrals Shaw interchange bridge near Strood in Kent.

It means the London-bound carriageway at junction 2 will be closed for one full weekend and five further nights.

A spokesperson said: "This work is critical to keeping the bridge well maintained and for improving safety.

"We’ll be repairing the bridge, replacing expansion joints, resurfacing, and waterproofing."

The work started on the 17 May and will continue until the 3 June.

The next full weekend closure will be on Friday (31 May) from 9pm until 6am on Monday (3 June).

National Highways said traffic will be diverted off the M2 via junction 2 exit slip to re-join the M2 via the M2 junction 2 entry slip.
