Rival Eurotunnel service would be a game changer say experts
Eurostar's stations in Ashford and Ebbsfleet are currently closed
Officials believe a new Eurotunnel service would be a game changer for Kent's businesses.
It follows claims from the operator of the Channel Tunnel that at least five companies were “seriously” interested in starting new passenger trains between the UK and Europe.
To encourage companies, Getlink has offered €50mn in support of new cross-Channel rail services to rival Eurostar.
Currently, there are no Eurostar services in Kent with their terminals in Ashford and Ebsfleet closing in 2020, not long after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Chief Executive of the Chamber of Commerce, Tudor Price, believes it's a game changer.
He said: "Like any organisation who is looking to invest in a project.
If they have got that incentive and de-risking element from GetLink and they have confidence that there is a market base to generate those revenues then that does a lot to get round the table and take it to the next stage.
"We will be supporting this from the get go, as it improves that accessibility and simplifies the movement of goods.
Talking to the financial times, Chief Executive of GetLink, Yann Leriche believes there would be room for more than one operator, splitting the money between the new entrants.
