Levels of antisocial behaviour in Tunbridge Wells have almost halved following targeted action in the town centre, according to Kent Police.

They say serious violent crime has also fallen by 44% compared to last year, as proactive hotspot patrols continue to operate in busy retail areas, parks and other public places.

Between January and June 2024 there were 149 reports of antisocial behaviour in the town centre. During the same period this year the number had reduced to 76. Incidents of violent crime fell from 52 incidents to 29.

One of the ways businesses raise concerns is through the Shop Safe radio system. On 17 July, this was used to alert officers that catapults were being used to target birds in an area close to the Royal Victoria Shopping Centre.

Patrols detained and searched two boys, leading to the seizure of a catapult and ball bearings. The children were taken to their parents and an investigation is ongoing.

CCTV operated by Tunbridge Wells Borough Council is also helping. On 21 July, camera operators assisted officers to locate a suspect linked to threats with a baseball bat and criminal damage at a bank in Mount Pleasant Road. A man was later charged with criminal damage, assault and possessing an offensive weapon and he will appear before Sevenoaks Magistrates’ Court next month.

Detective Inspector Chris Mayers said: "Reducing antisocial behaviour plays a large part in also preventing other crimes such as shoplifting and drugs supply. We know our targeted patrols are making a real difference and the importance of local beat officers and PCSOs also remains key to listening to and responding to the concerns of the communities and businesses we serve."

Some of the latest enforcement also includes tackling the illegal or nuisance use of motorcycles linked to areas in the town centre, as well as locations in the nearby Sherwood and Showfields estates. On 3 July 2025, patrolling officers pursued two teenagers on foot who had been seen riding a moped near Nevill Park.

They were both arrested, and a lock knife was also seized. Checks on the bike confirmed it had been reported stolen from Crescent Road car park. Both suspects are currently bailed pending further investigation. Enforcement around vehicles has also led to separate investigations linked to drugs supply, with arrests of suspects on motorcycles for dealing cocaine and cannabis.

Det Insp Mayers added: "We have dedicated teams, both in uniform and plain clothes, who are committed to protecting businesses and residents from the small minority of people often responsible for a disproportionate large volume of crime. These reductions in antisocial behaviour and violent offences are encouraging and are also linked to the fantastic support we receive from the local community. So please continue to always report anything suspicious. This really assists in targeting criminals, hot spots of crime and bringing offenders to justice."
