Ramsgate fisherman 'forgotten' after funding reduced

The £3 million promised has been cut to £100,000

Ramsgate fisherman say they feel forgotten about after their funding was reduced.

After a levelling up bid, they were promised over £3 million but that was cut by Thanet District council (TDC) to £100,000, redirecting the money in a bid to bring ferries back into the town.

John Nichols is of the Thanet Fisherman's Association, he says the industry is under threat and can achieve little with the revised funding total.

"It won't scratch the surface. You'd almost be better of not having anything than having £100,00 because you're not going to achieve anything with it."

"This harbour wasn't built to house ferries, it was built on the back of a fishing fleet."

Mr Nichols says he thinks an opportunity to provide more jobs is being missed.

"The fish and chip facility which was planned would create jobs. So I don't agree with the claim that the output isn't there."

"What we do have the opportunity for is to provide further employment whilst protecting what's already there."

TDC say they had no choice to relocate due to government rules.
