Dover County Council have confirmed deposits of oil and tar have been located on the coast of East Kent.

The council confirmed they are aware of some dead sea birds, which is thought to have been caused by the oil.

An urgent clean up is being organised between Kingsdown and Sandwich/Stour Estuary.

The area has been surveyed by a HM Coastguard aircraft as well as Coastguard Rescue Teams from Deal, Langdon Battery and Margate.

Thanet District Council have also confirmed they have found deposits of oil on the coastline.

Though they say deposits have been cleared, by the council’s Coastal team, at bays between Viking Bay in Broadstairs and the Western Undercliff in Ramsgate.

The authority, along with Kent County Council, Dover District Council, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the Environment Agency are all working together to respond to the incident.

A spokesperson from Dover County Council said:

"Please keep children and pets away from the oil and any dead marine animals.

"We ask that dogs be kept on leads on the stretch of affected coast.

"If you see more substantial deposits of oil or larger dead animals (such as seals) please contact us with a brief description and the location."
