A victim who suffered head wounds after being assaulted with a glass in a Maidstone bar has seen the person responsible jailed.

On 5 November 2023, a man in his 50s was socialising at the venue in Week Street when he started talking to Chay Hart.

Hart suddenly struck his head with a glass in an unprovoked assault causing the victim to fall to the floor. Hart then kicked him twice before being ejected from the premises.

Serious injuries

The victim suffered cuts to his head and forehead that later required 18 stitches at hospital.

The incident was reported to the police and patrols tracked Hart down and arrested him near Bishops Way.

Hart, of no fixed address, was charged and pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Sentenced

On Wednesday 24 April 2024, the 34-year-old was given a custodial sentence of four years and three months’ imprisonment. Upon his release from prison he will be subject to an extended licence period of two years.

Detective Constable Nell Shortis, of West Kent CID, said: "Hart was responsible for an unprovoked and brutal assault on a victim who had dropped into a local bar for a drink.

"The incident left a man with serious head wounds and he continues to suffer the long-term effects of the attack to this day. His assailant tried to evade arrest as he made his way through the town centre but a prompt response from patrols meant he was swiftly identified and detained.

"I would like to commend the victim who has shown great courage and determination in assisting our investigation throughout. I hope he can find some closure on his ordeal now this violent criminal has been brought to justice."
