A suspected thief has appeared in court charged with assaulting two officers in Strood.

On Thursday 25 April 2024, a patrol car responding to a report of a road traffic collision stopped to check a Ford Transit van in Castle View Road.

It is alleged two constables were assaulted before the occupant of the vehicle left the scene on foot. A suspect was subsequently located near Central Road and arrested.

Johnathan Russell, of no fixed address, was later charged by investigators from the Medway Victim Based Crime Team, with two counts of assaulting an emergency worker and failing to provide a specimen of breath for a breath test.

He was also charged with theft of alcohol from a supermarket in Gravesend, and failing to provide a sample for a drug test whilst in custody.

The 36-year-old appeared before Medway Magistrates’ Court where he was conditionally bailed to a hearing on Friday 19 July.
