Man due in court after allegedly setting fire to house in Canterbury

A man is due in court after allegedly assaulting a person with a baseball bat and setting fire to a property in Canterbury.

Officers were called to an address in Frencham Close on 11th December 2023 following reports that a person had been kicked, punched and attacked with a baseball bat before their room was then set on fire.

Evacuation

Kent Fire and Rescue attended to extinguish the fire and residents were evacuated from the building.

South East Coast Ambulance Service also attended and treated the victim, who was later taken to hospital with head injuries and suffering from smoke inhalation.

The victim has since been discharged.

Charged

An investigation led to the arrest of Will Crump, 35, of Frencham Close in Canterbury. He was charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and arson with intent to endanger life on 12 December 2023.

Mr Crump appeared before Folkestone Magistrates' Court on 13 December and was remanded in custody. He is due to re-appear before Canterbury Crown Court on 15 January 2024.

A further man was arrested in connection with the incident and later bailed pending further enquiries.
