A suspect has been charged after two officers were allegedly threatened with a weapon in Gillingham.

At 2.36am yesterday (10 December), patrols were called to a report that a vehicle’s window was being damaged in Chaucer Road.

Two constables attended the scene where it is alleged one was assaulted and both were threatened with an axe, as a suspect sought to leave the area on foot.

A man was subsequently detained near the town centre and taken into custody.

Mark Cork, of East Street, Chatham, was later charged with assaulting an emergency worker, possessing an axe in a public place and two counts of threatening a person with a bladed article.

The 44-year-old was remanded in custody to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court today (11 December).
