A section of the M2 will close for the weekend, starting tonight.

Junction 2 near Rochester will be closed till Monday morning to continue 'critical' repairs on the Merrals Shaw interchange bridge.

It will run between 31 May at 21:00 BST to 3 June at 06:00.

More closures are scheduled for five nights, starting from the 3rd of June between 21:00 to 06:00.

To repair the bridge, National Highways said it will replace expansion joints, resurface and waterproof the bridge.

"The diversion road is quite short, but we've got a three lane, highspeed road, narrowing down to a single lane, and through a slow roundabout so there will be considerable congestion.

"That's why we are asking people to avoid the area as much as possible.

"We are sorry for the disruption, we have looked long and hard at different ways of doing this but it's not possible to do these works without closing the works.

"However, experience with the traffic flows shows that this is the best time to do this work during a school holiday."
