Four kittens have been dumped outside a Canterbury church.

The sad discovery was made at around 10:40am on Wednesday 3rd September by a concerned member of the public.

The kittens - two black, one tabby and one white and tabby - were brought into the church hall and the finder called the RSPCA.

Inspector Deborah Rutherford is leading the investigation. She said: “Leaving these poor defenceless animals alone - possibly overnight - trapped inside a cool bag is incredibly heartless. They were covered in fleas, terribly underweight and must have been terrified. We urge anyone with information to get in touch.”

The approximately 6-week-old kittens - two male and two female - are now recovering in the care of RSPCA Canterbury and District branch and have been named Becket, Moore, Bertha and Augustine after religious figures connected to the churches in Canterbury.

The RSPCA is urging pet owners to neuter and microchip their cats, saying neutering prevents unwanted litters and often leads to healthier, happier cats.

Female cats can become pregnant from just four months old, with the potential to produce up to 18 kittens per year.

“Abandoning animals is never the answer,” Inspector Rutherford added. “We understand the cost of living crisis is affecting many, and we offer help and advice to struggling pet owners.”

The dedicated cost of living crisis page on the RSPCA website offers tips on how to save money, how to reduce vets’ bills and how to find a pet food bank.
