Kent Police Dog Boris retires from duty

He's putting his paws up, after five years of service

Kent Police is bidding farewell to one of its most effective dogs as he goes into a well-earned retirement.

PD Boris has had an illustrious five-year career with the force and has played a significant part in the arrest of several dangerous criminals.

Those who have thought they could avoid being arrested by running from the police or hiding away in a remote location have been undone by Boris’ athleticism and incredible sense of smell.

Highlights

Two highlights were hunting down a violent man wanted on suspicion of robbery and kidnap and who had hidden in some dense undergrowth in Sittingbourne; and chasing and restraining a suspect following an allegation he had indecently exposed himself towards two women in Sheerness.

PD Boris is also an excellent tracker and whilst searching for suspects who had stolen a delivery van in Medway he located the victim’s phone after it had been discarded in a bush.

PD Boris injured

In his last 10 days of service, Boris detained three separate offenders, one of whom is reported to have assaulted him and caused facial injuries.

In spite of suffering cuts and bruises, PD Boris held onto his target until his handler arrived on the scene and took the suspect into custody.

PC Nathan Southern said: "I have worked with PD Boris for just over two years and he has been an exceptional public servant. Many villains who have sought to outrun him have found to their cost that he will relentlessly pursue them until they surrender or need additional persuasion. He will now retire to a loving home where he can reminisce on his many successes.

"Criminals should not, however, be encouraged by his absence from the streets as his younger colleagues will be enthusiastically taking on the challenge of protecting the people of Kent."
