Former Kent County Council (KCC) leader Roger Gough has been shortlisted for a major award by one of local government’s most influential bodies.

Mr Gough, who lost his Sevenoaks seat when Reform UK swept into power with a landslide majority in May, is up for the Lifetime Legend gong from the Local Government Information Unit (LGiU).

The judging panel has noted his “collaborative and consultative” approach to leadership, citing in particular his work in setting up the Financial Hardship Programme.

He had been a county councillor for 20 years, holding the education portfolio before spending six years as KCC leader.

Mr Gough will learn if he has won at a ceremony to be held at the Guildhall in London next Tuesday evening.

A statement released by the LGiU said: The Lifetime Legend award recognises those councillors who, over many years of public service, have made a lasting and transformative difference to their communities.

“Roger’s nomination highlighted his dedication to Kent residents over 20 years as a county councillor. As leader of the council for six years his leadership style was collaborative and consultative.

“He was praised for his many achievements, of which the Financial Hardship Programme is probably his greatest legacy – a testament to partnership working and leading through consensus.”

Mr Gough said today: “I am delighted to be nominated and shortlisted and I look forward to the event next week.”
