A man from Canterbury has told us he is forced to skip meals just to pay for his energy bills.

Yesterday the price cap increased by 10 percent, meaning the average household energy bill will cost £149 more.

The current annual bill for a typical dual fuel household in England, Scotland and Wales is £1,568 but it will now rise to £1,717.

John Elliot is 58 years old and lives in Canterbury. Last year he went into debt because he couldn't pay his energy bills, as a result he has been forced to eat every other day just so he can save enough money.

He said: "It's hard, it's depressing, you can't socialise because you haven't got any money, you end up staying in doors most of the time just twiddling your thumbs thinking about what you could do to change this situation.

"I'm forced to do this because I have epilepsy so if I don't keep warm then I could have seizures and I'm just 58, think about the poor pensioners or families who have to feed their children using gas and electricity... it's eat or heat you know.

"Since last year I have been really struggling to pay my bills and I've only recently just paid off my debt where I was paying twice weekly instead of monthly."
