Motorists in Kent are set to face disruption as roadworks will close part of the A249 for five weeks.

National Highways has confirmed the southbound carriageway between Church Hill towards Maidstone will be closed from the 23 February till the 30th March.

It is part of a final phase of improvements to the M2 Junction 5 Stockbury Roundabout.

This will include removing the existing road and building up the layers that will form the new carriageway, as well as drainage, construction of the central reservation, and safety barrier improvements.

National Highways said two lanes will be kept open heading towards the roundabout from Maidstone in order to limit disruption.

There will be traffic lights in place to allow access into Church Hill on weekdays, however there will be some full overnight and weekend closures.

When the road reopens at 5am on Saturday 30 March, both sides of the A249 will be open.

Other work taking place during the closure includes:

  • The A249 southbound (towards Maidstone) exit from the Stockbury Roundabout
  • The northbound (towards Sheppey) A249 onto the Stockbury flyover
  • The South Green link road that will connect South Green Lane and Oad Street to the Stockbury Roundabout
  • The M2 London-bound exit slip

It is the final year of the scheme, with work expected to finish in 2025.
