Man charged with shoplifting and assaulting emergency workers in Canterbury

A man has been charged with shoplifting and assaulting an emergency worker in Canterbury.

Kent Police were called to a supermarket on Sturry Road at around midnight on Tuesday (July 2) to reports a man had tried to steal alcohol.

A security guard who had challenged the suspect was threatened before the man left the shop.

The man was detained nearby shortly afterwards. He was found to be carrying a small amount of white powder, believed to be cocaine.

37 year old Stephen McGinty, of no fixed address, has been charged with two counts of assault on an emergency worker, possession of a class A drug, theft and a public order offence.

He has been remanded in custody to appear before Margate Magistrates’ Court today (July 4).
