Beacons were lit across Kent last night to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings.

It was part of a country wide event, with hundreds of communities lighting a beacon at 21:15. Peter Topley was given the honour at the Royal British Legion Industries in Aylesford

His father, Arthur Gower, was one soldier who fought on the 6th June 1944 and his son Peter says it's a chance to remember him.

He said: "It was a great honour to remember not only my dad but all the other guys who laid their life down for us because that's what they did, they sacrificed their life for us.

Another Veteran in attendance was Peter Topley, he says that more needs to done to help those that served their country, once they leave the army.

He said: "When you join the services that build you up to be number one.

"Though when you leave, if you're broken, they don't repair you before they put you out, you just go into the world with all your problems, which isn't very good.

"When someone comes out the service make sure they have somewhere to live, somewhere decent, with proper facilities.

"And get them into work, most of them want to work, but they haven't got the ability to at the time, so don't just let them go, help them."
