Attempted murder charge after serious assault in Chatham

A suspect has been charged with attempted murder, after a report of a serious assault in Chatham.

At 8.06pm on Monday 28 October 2024, Kent Police was called by South East Coast Ambulance Service to an injured man in the High Street.

Officers attended the scene, near the junction with Rhode Street, where the victim, who is in his 30s, was treated for injuries consistent with stab wounds. He was taken to hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition

A man was arrested in Gillingham later the same evening and taken into custody.

Charged

Today (Wednesday 30 October), Ray Chirisa, 33, of Hermitage Lane, Maidstone, was charged with attempted murder and possessing a knife in a public place. He was remanded in custody to appear before Medway Magistrates' Court later the same day.

The incident is being treated as isolated and detectives are urging any witnesses who have not yet spoken to the police to contact the appeal line.
